It is very easy to put off making a will. However, if you die without one, your money and possessions may be distributed according to the law rather than your wishes.
It is important to make a will because:
- You can decide how your assets are shared out
- Your partner may not automatically inherit if you are not married or in a civil partnership
- You can decide whether to leave an ex-partner something if they are living with someone else since your divorce or your civil partnership was dissolved
- You can make sure your relatives don't pay more inheritance tax than necessary
- You can appoint testamentary guardians for your children
